This post answers the question, is road cycling dangerous? As a road cyclist, I’ve spent countless hours and ridden many, many miles on the road, and I know firsthand the potential dangers that come with it. However, with the right knowledge and precautions, road cycling can be a safe and enjoyable activity. In this blog post, I’ll share some tips to help you ride safely on the road.
Sharing the Road
One of the biggest dangers of road cycling is sharing the road with other vehicles. Here in Utah it’s a state law that drivers must give you 3 feet of clearance when passing a cyclist. Guess what? They don’t all do that! So you need to be prepared. To mitigate this risk, it’s important for cyclists to be visible, courteous, predictable, and prepared.
Be Visible
Visibility is key when riding on the road. Cyclists should wear bright, reflective clothing and use lights, especially when riding at night or in low-light conditions. I’ve found that taillights even in the daytime help drivers see you. Additionally, cyclists should ride in a predictable manner and avoid sudden movements that could startle drivers.
Be Courteous
Cyclists should always follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signs and lights. When riding in a group, cyclists should ride single file and avoid blocking the road. I know, it looks way cooler for large groups to ride in a double pace line, but you’ll likely be holding up traffic at some point and pissed off drivers can be erratic and cause accidents. Also remember that if you’re on a bike and get hit by a car, you can get seriously hurt or killed. Additionally, cyclists should be aware of their surroundings and yield to pedestrians and other cyclists when necessary.
Be Predictable
Predictability is essential when riding on the road. Cyclists should avoid swerving into traffic and should always ride in a straight line. Additionally, cyclists should avoid wearing earbuds or headphones so they can hear their surroundings and react accordingly.
Be Prepared
Finally, cyclists should always be prepared for the unexpected. This means carrying tools and supplies to take care of their body and their bike. This includes a spare tube, a pump, and a multi-tool for minor mechanical issues. Additionally, cyclists should carry a phone and identification in case of an emergency.
